Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is GABA?

GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is naturally occurring amino acid in our brain. It is one of the major inhibitory neurotransmitters in the central nervous system and has been found in several peripheral tissues. Amino acid neurotransmitters are critical for the function of the central nervous system (CNS); they have fast actions, producing responses within few milliseconds playing an important role in brain functions and neurological diseases.
GABA levels can drop when a person is subjected to stressful conditions. Therefore, supplementation with a safe, clinically proven form of GABA, such as PharmaGABA®, may be beneficial in reestablishing ideal GABA levels.

  • What is PharmaGABA®?

PharmaGABA® is a natural form of GABA manufactured by a fermentation process using a Lactobacillus bacteria – the same kind of bacteria used to ferment vegetables, cheese, wine and other traditional diets. The bacteria are fed nutrients, including glutamic acid from sugar cane, to produce a high level of GABA that can then be concentrated through a filtration process.

  • What is the difference between synthetic GABA and PharmaGABA®?

The differences are vast. PharmaGABA® is produced naturally with proven safety and efficacy. Synthetic GABA is produced from various toxic chemicals including succinimide, piperylurethan and fuming nitric acid, N-(β-bromoethyl) phthalimide and sodiomalonic ester, and γ-chlorobutyronitrile and potassium phthalimide. These compounds are regarded as noxious substances and thus prohibited to use in foods in many countries. PharmaGABA® is approved for food use in many countries. It is both safe and effective.

  • Are there any side effects or drug interactions with PharmaGABA®?

GABA exists naturally in a large number of commonly consumed foods such as tomatoes, potatoes, melons, fermented foods etc. PharmaGABA® is widely available in the Japanese market since 2003. PharmaGABA® is found in variety of products such as foods, beverages, confectionaries, supplements, bakery and dairy products etc. Throughout its sales history, there is no report of any side effects or drug interactions with PharmaGABA®. However, pregnant women and children under 6 years of age should consult with physicians before use.

  • When to use PharmaGABA®?

We recommend to use PharmaGABA® approximately 30 to 60 min before bed or a stressful situation.
